LEGO Friends Review
Within the game is an entire high school world, including several different hangouts to investigate with (or without) your new musical chums. The band, part girl-power garage band, part Josie and the Pussycats, has plenty of individual personalities. Band members come unnamed, so players can provide each one with the ultimate hip identity.
An interesting subtext of LEGO Friends touches on key elements of what it's like for girls to transition into adult activities. For example, while the software is labeled for 7 and up, some of the activities involve flirting with LEGO boys via pretend cell phones--a pastime we found suitable and appropriate for those a bit older than 7. The music choices are great (and, frankly, who knew Euro-dance could sound so rockin?), but an added bonus is that the dance-step designer can provide a strong outlet for girls feeling clumsy in the middle of growth spurts. The entertaining school-related activities are great practice for burgeoning social skills, and the characters are funny and friendly.
If you're looking for the latest in LEGO-set building, it's doubtful this will suit you, but if you've got a girl who's into jammin' with some cool chicas, this may be just the ticket. --Jill Lightner

Instant Immersion Italian (4 CD-ROM) Review
The software package includes two other skill-level-dependent CD-ROMs. For absolute beginners, you'll start with the "Talk Now!" CD-ROM and learn basic words acontextually for colors, food, numbers, and basic phrases. You hear the Italian pronounced while an image of he concept is shown. Most teachers actually prefer this, so that students associate the Italian sounds and words directly with a concept rather than the English translation. Intermediate students will start with the "Word Talk Italian" CD-ROM, which has a variety of games to practice vocabulary and a few more dialogues; you can also take dictation exercises or use your computer's microphone to repeat after the audio and compare your pronunciation to the recording. (It's painful, we know, but it helps.) The fourth CD-ROM is "Webster's New World Five Language Talking Dictionary"--a nice perk for pronunciation practice but not a real replacement for your handy Collins Gem.
Caveats: First, the various CD-ROMs are not truly sequential, so do not necessarily expect to graduate from the beginning and intermediate CD-ROMs to the "Voyage in Italy" narrative. Second, the software is no ersatz for a competent Italian teacher and loads of homework, so do not expect similar results. The pedagogical approach here does not emphasize student production of Italian, either in speech or writing, so you will learn more to recognize spoken and written words and phrases than to speak or write them yourself. Overall, however, Instant Immersion Italian is a strong and, above all, affordable vocabulary-building resource--and it will take the doldrums out of memorizing new words. --Erik Macki
In Europe, it's no secret that the vast majority of people are either bilingual or trilingual. The Euro Method is the easy and simple way many Europeans use to learn to speak a second language. Based on the same tried and proven techniques that allow a four-year old to learn to speak a language long before that same child can read or write, the Instant Immersion Italian box set is guaranteed to be the best method for learning to SPEAK Italian quickly.
For years, linguists have known that an immersion environment is the absolute, fastest way to learn a second language-the concept is based on being surrounded by native speakers and a new culture. Because most of us cannot afford to spend six months in Italy, the Instant Immersion method is the next best thing, simulating immersion with interactive Italian lessons and speakers.
The first two CDs are from EuroTalk, the leading publisher of language learning software in Europe. Talk Now! and World Talk will take you from a beginner to an intermediate speaker faster than any other software on the market, and all the while, they are fun, easy-to-follow, and unlike other software programs, you will be able to complete all the lessons. Webster's New World Five-Language Talking Dictionary is a real time pop-up dictionary that allows translation from English to French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Dutch. Finally, to round out the immersion experience, Voyage in Italy offers an excellent multimedia overview of the sights in Italy and the lifestyles of its inhabitants. Start speaking Italian today!
